Student update: Semester-based exams from 2019/20

From next academic year (2019/20), Queen Mary will move to a system of semester-based exams. This means that modules taught in Semester 1 will be examined in January. Modules taught across Semester 1 and 2, or modules taught only in Semester 2, will be examined in May.

The new semester and exam dates for the next five years have been agreed and are available on the Academic Registry website: www.arcs.qmul.ac.uk/students/sec/term-dates

These changes have come about as a result of student feedback. Students have told us that they would prefer to be examined on the content of a module as soon as that module has been taught. The change also means that you will benefit from the feedback you receive after the Semester 1 assessment period, which should be a useful tool in preparing for your summer examinations. It will also mean that your exams and assessments are split more evenly across the year, allowing you more time to plan and revise.

Student representatives were involved in the initial consultation exercise which ended in May 2018. The proposed changes were then discussed and agreed at Senate, the body that has main responsibility for overseeing our academic activity. Five student representatives are members of Senate.
