I want a mentor

The Buddy Scheme is here to help our new undergraduate students settle into life at Queen Mary. Starting university can leave you with a lot of questions, many of which current students are the best equipped to answer. Our mentors are trained to support incoming students socially and will work with you throughout the year to unburden some of your worries, help you to integrate into Queen Mary and make sure you truly enjoy your time here.

Why have a mentor?

Feeling positive and knowing that you have someone you can rely on can have a major impact on your academic performance – having a mentor can play a huge role in this, as it can help you:

  • Meet new people from your course and the University;
  • Learn more about the University and local area;
  • Gain practical advice, encouragement and support;
  • Help you to get involved with Students' Union activities such as events and societies and
  • Signpost you to services on campus.

How does it work?

Queen Mary students are the best! We have had so many of our current students across our schools sign up to be mentors that in many schools you will automatically get a mentor. You can also complete the online application form to sign up.

Your new mentor will send you an e-mail to arrange your first meet up, so look out for this and make sure to check your Queen Mary inbox at the start of term. If you miss the e-mail, don't worry, send your mentor a message and they will add you to the next meet-up.

After that, your buddy will contact you once a week to see how you're getting on, and will organise an activity, event or drop-in session for you and your group fortnightly. You will be able to get some tried and tested tips from current students and get access to support when you need it.

The online mentee application deadline is 5pm on 1st September 2023.

If you have not heard from a mentor by 8th October and you would like to be allocated one, please email us at buddyscheme@qmul.ac.uk and we will do our very best to match you up.
