Curious about what the Year of the Ox is all about?

Did you know that sayings such as 你很牛 (Nǐhěn niú, you very like ox), is the Chinese slang for “you are awesome”? Professor Zhi Geng from Queen Mary's Confucius Institute has written a special article all about celebrating the Year of the Ox that looks at the traditions of the animal zodiac, previous year's celebrations and gives ideas for celebrating this year.

Members of the Confucius Institute have made this special video to wish you all a very happy Lunar New Year!

On campus?

Queen Mary Food will be celebrating Lunar New Year with a special menu at The Curve this Friday, 12 February, between 11.30am-3pm and 4.30-6pm. Come and see the beautiful red decorations and enjoy a feast.

The menu is:

  • Chicken with red peppers and an orange and Szechuan pepper sauce
  • Catfish with shitake mushrooms, ginger, soy, spring onion and crispy shallots
  • Smoked tofu with red peppers, shitake mushrooms in char sui sauce
  • Plant-based salt and pepper chicken with sesame and bamboo shoots.

You can get either one full portion or two half portions for just £7.

Additional items include: vegetable chow mein, steamed rice, two vegan gzoya dumplings, prawn crackers, fortune cookie, dipping sauce, red napkins, and chopsticks.

Celebrating from home?

Like other major celebrations this year and last, many of us will be celebrating Lunar New Year from home. We've put together a list of tips on how you can celebrate from home from making your own fortune cookies to completing a Year of the Ox fitness challenge.
