Having the Opportunity to be a part of Buddy Scheme as a Student Mentor has been one of the rewarding experiences at QMUL. Starting university can feel overwhelming but a support of a mentor can make a difference in helping new students settle in whether its making mentees understand how assignments and grade structures work, finding quite study spots, exploring campus facilities, or suggesting social opportunities offered by Business and Management School.

Coming From a Goan ethnic minority, I understand the importance of guidance for students who may be the first in their families to attend university. Being able to offer advice based on my experiences and my university journey helped my mentees feel reassured and confident. Through this experience I learnt that often the most valuable support was simply listening and providing reassurance made a difference to their adjustment.

Being a Mentor gave me a chance to connect with students across diverse backgrounds, lean something new from every conversation, build meaningful relations and contribute positively to university community. I would strongly encourage any student to apply to the Buddy Scheme as it’s not only opportunity to give back but also a chance to grow personally.

Being a Mentor enables you to develop empathy, patience and confidence while making tangible difference in someone else’s experience. You’ll learn to support others, solve problems and adapt your approach to meet different needs with the training given as a part of the programme. Beyond this it’s a rewarding experience as you feel the self-satisfaction when you get to see the direct impact of your support and enjoy mentees’ progress while possibly forming friendships that last beyond the scheme.
