The journey has started! How can you build good habits?

Our QM Elevate team share three tips to help you communicate with confidence in writing and speaking at university.

Published:

Show commitment to your studies:

  • It is expected that you attend all taught sessions regularly, but more than that, it’s known that regular attendance improves performance outcomes. Most modules will have good detail about the course on QMplus and you are expected to login to your QMplus modules often (lecturers can track your QMplus activity).  Help yourself by becoming completely familiar with the QMplus pages for each of your modules.

Being a student means reading:

  • Reading academic texts is part of the deal of coming to university. Aim to get the big picture of your subject; make time to keep up with any set reading each week, but also read around your subject to build your subject knowledge. Lecturers often provide reading lists on QMplus.

University skills include effective communication:

  • The UK higher education environment expects contributions from students, so don't be afraid to speak up in seminars: give your evaluation/opinion, ask questions, express any doubts thoughtfully. You can practice speaking about your course topics with peers in a student study group; it’s a good way to test theories, but your lecturers want to know that you are engaging so communicate your ideas with them too.  In both speaking and writing you need to express your own academic voice; think of it like this: ‘they say, I say’ because responding to ideas and texts demonstrates your critical thinking.

If you’d like more advice and practical help, sign up for our QM Elevate courses. We have free 10-week and five-week modules available for registration via MySIS.
