Stephen Lawrence Day 2025
On April 22, Queen Mary will proudly mark Stephen Lawrence Day for the 3rd year with a dedicated programme of reflection, education, and action.

Established to honour the life and legacy of Stephen Lawrence—a Black teenager whose racially motivated murder in 1993 exposed institutional failings and sparked a national conversation on race and justice—Stephen Lawrence Day challenges us to continue striving for an equitable society. At Queen Mary, we recognise the vital importance of standing against racism and working towards a fairer, more inclusive future for all. Our programme brings together students, staff, and the wider community to engage in meaningful dialogue, share experiences, and spotlight the ongoing need for systemic change. Through our pledges, talks, and creative expression, we aim not only to remember Stephen, but to inspire positive action in his name. This year’s events are rooted in our collective commitment to social justice and in empowering individuals to make a difference—both within the University and beyond. Below is a programme of activities taking place across our institution to mark this historic occasion:
Moveathon
Kicking things off is our month-long Moveathon! Join solo or as a team to complete 22,000 steps, kilometres, or miles in honour of the 22nd of April—any way you choose—to help raise awareness.
BLOC Film Screening – Stephen: The Murder That Changed A Nation (2018)
We are screening an award-winning documentary “Stephen: The Murder That Changed A Nation” in our very own BLOC cinema to mark the day.

Pledge
This Stephen Lawrence Day, we invite you to make a personal pledge on how you will take accountability for progressing race equality. Your commitment, however big or small, matters. Submit your short pledge anonymously via Mentimeter and be part of a collective movement for lasting change.
Pannel Talk – Progress in Social Justice Systems
This year, we are hosting an online panel event to discuss progress in social justice and legal systems over the past 32 years, following the murder of Stephen Lawrence. The event will highlight how his legacy became a catalyst for positive change in advancing race equality. Event details coming soon.
