Stephen Lawrence Day 2023

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Published:

Stephen Lawrence Day takes place on 22 April – an annual event held on the anniversary of Stephen’s death to celebrate his life and his legacy. 30 years on, Stephen's story is both challenging and inspirational and has led to profound cultural changes in attitudes to racism, the law and police practice. It has also paved the way for a greater understanding of discrimination of all forms and new equalities legislation.

Queen Mary is on a long and deep journey to tackle racial inequalities and this work is underpinned in our People, Culture, and Inclusion Enabling Plan. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where our staff and students from all ethnic and racial backgrounds can thrive.

Making sure the next 30 years look different from the past

To mark Stephen Lawrence Day 2023, our Race Equality Action Group are making #StephenLawrenceDayPledges in honour of the foundations goal to ensure that the next 30 years look different from the last.

You can also add your own pledge - join us in taking action to positively impact the lives of young people from marginalised backgrounds. Together, we can honour Stephen's life and legacy, and help to build a fairer, kinder and more equitable society in his name.
