Sleep Well with the Sleep Charity

The HSS Faculty Education Team recently held two sleep workshops, facilitated by experts from The Sleep Charity, to support student wellbeing by improving their quality of sleep. Read below for some tips on how to improve your sleep.

Published:

Some key takeaways from the session include the impact of sleep quality on learning and concentration, the body’s natural melatonin cycle and various sleep stages throughout the night, and practical steps to take if you are struggling with your sleep quality.

If you missed the session but are interested in improving your sleep, particularly over the exam period, here are some useful practical and evidence-based tips from the session:

  • Use your bed for sleeping only – study in a different room, or split your bedroom into different zones for different purposes
  • Reduce screen time before bed, particularly with bright colours and blue light
  • Set sleep and wake-up times, and try to stick to this routine
  • Reduce your caffeine intake, especially in the afternoon and evening
  • If you can’t sleep, try mindfulness, meditation or relaxation techniques

For more evidence-based guidance and information about sleep, you can find out more on The Sleep Charity’s website.

The sessions were well attended and received positive feedback from students, particularly about the knowledge of the presenter, the usability of the tips and guidance, and the interactivity of the Q&A section at the end.

The HSS Faculty Education Team will be holding another sleep workshop in late January for HSS students, facilitated by Tower Hamlets Talking Therapies, for those who missed the December workshops. Further details will be sent via email soon.

Best of luck with your upcoming assessments!
