Artemis Webster, a current chemistry student Queen Mary has won the targetjobs Undergraduate of the Year for Excellence Through Adversity award. The award, sponsored by Rolls Royce, is awarded to the person who “demonstrates resilience, faces challenges head on and isn’t afraid to think differently”.

As part of the award, Artemis will complete a ten-week paid summer internship at Rolls Royce with the opportunity to shadow a senior manager for a day, as well as receiving gifts including an Apple watch.

Artemis comes from a care leaving background and tutors other students from underrepresented backgrounds for the not-for-profit social enterprise, Peppo Tutors. She is also a Unite Foundation Scholar and is a student ambassador helping to recruit new students into STEM subjects at Queen Mary.

Artemis hopes to break the stigmas surrounding care leavers and estranged students at university and to help others achieve excellence through adversity.

Artemis said: "One of the most important things I’ve learnt is to believe in yourself, even when things don’t go to plan. It’s ok for that to happen, as long as you don’t let it define you. You are worth so much more than your grades or your performance. In my opinion, the smallest things like getting out of bed in the morning and making the most of each day have been my version of excellence through the hardest of times. Overcoming my own challenges and obstacles has been really difficult at times, but it has given me confidence to try again and succeed!"

 Congratulations, Artemis!
