Queen Mary confirmed as one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities

Queen Mary's President and Principal Professor Colin Bailey writes to students to celebrate the University's success in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Published:

Dear student,

I am delighted to write to you with news of Queen Mary’s success in the latest Government exercise to rate research in UK universities: the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). The results of this exercise, published today, cement Queen Mary’s status as one of the best research-intensive universities in the UK. We have been ranked joint 7th in the UK for the quality of our research, which is a fantastic achievement: 92% of Queen Mary’s research has been assessed as internationally excellent or world-leading.

Looking at our results at subject level, we have been rated number 1 in the UK for Drama, and the following subject areas are also in the top 10:

  • Computer Science and Informatics
  • Economics and Econometrics
  • Engineering
  • Film
  • History
  • Politics and International Studies

Today’s results are a testament to our outstanding community of staff: the very staff who teach you. At Queen Mary we ensure our research infuses our teaching – and so our success today says as much about our educational excellence as it does about our research.

These results, alongside the recent recognition we have achieved for social mobility and in public engagement, demonstrate that excellence in research can sit side by side with an unrivalled commitment to inclusion, social justice and social mobility. Have a look at some of the case studies we submitted so that you can see the brilliant work our staff do.

I am hugely proud of all our staff and hope that you too feel the impact of this tremendous success.

You can find out more about our success in our news story, and explore our featured research case studies to learn more about our world-leading research.

Best wishes,

Colin
