Tips from the Advice and Counselling Service to help you manage your money

Published:

Worried about money? Next week is Talk Money Week!

Learn how to take control of your money and stress less. Come to The Nest on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 November, 12-2pm and get advice about budget planning, increasing your income, and money saving ideas.

Having problems with your Student Finance?

If you have applied for Student Finance but you have not received it or only some of it, follow the advice on our website, including information on interim sources of funding.

Budgeting

Planning your income and spending for the year will mean you are more in control of your money and less likely to worry about it. If you’ve never planned a budget, now is the time to start! See how easy it is on our Budgeting webpage. You can watch a short animation about the benefits of budgeting, and personalise one of our spreadsheets to work out your own budget. Contact Welfare Adviser for help with this if you would like.

Do you need extra money for your living costs?

The University Financial Assistance Fund considers applications from students in financial hardship. Awards made by the fund are normally grants, so you don’t need to pay this money back. You can download an application form and guidance notes, which explain the eligibility criteria. If you need any advice about making your application, contact a Welfare Adviser.

Part-time work

Are you looking to do some part-time work to increase your income, as well as to gain useful skills and work experience? The Advice and Counselling Service and QMUL Careers & Enterprise have written a guide to Part-time work which explains:

  • how to find work
  • how much you might earn
  • income tax and national insurance
  • the rules for working for international students.

Are you getting the best value for your money?

In all areas of your spending (for example food shopping, books, travel costs, mobile phone and household bills) it is important to make sure that you get the best value for your money. Could you get the same thing cheaper elsewhere? Read the money saving ideas on our budgeting web page and save £££££s!

Do you need further advice?
