QM Elevate: tips for getting the basics right
Tip 1: Build strong study habits
Doing well at university starts with getting the basics right. Attend your classes, keep up with reading and note-taking, plan your study time, and stay on top of deadlines. You don’t need to change everything at once: small improvements to your everyday study habits can make a big difference over time.
Tip 2: Understand academic writing in your discipline
Academic writing is not the same in every subject. Learn the conventions of writing in your discipline, including how arguments are developed, what criticality looks like, and how evidence and references are used to support your ideas. Understanding what good academic writing looks like in your subject will help you make more informed choices and communicate your ideas with greater confidence.
Tip 3: Think critically, not just descriptively
University assignments usually ask you to do more than describe what you have read. Strong academic work involves analysing ideas, evaluating evidence, questioning different perspectives, and developing your own conclusions. Building your critical thinking skills will help you develop stronger arguments and produce more convincing academic work.
