QM Elevate: tips for doing well in assignments

Published:

Tip 1: Unpack the assignment question

Before you start researching or writing, take time to unpack exactly what the assignment question is asking you to do. Identify the key topic, the main instruction words such as analyse, evaluate, compare or discuss, and any limits on what you need to cover. Breaking the question into smaller parts will help you stay focused and make sure your assignment actually answers the question.

Tip 2: Know what your markers are looking for

Take some time to read the marking criteria and any assessment guidance provided for your module. Look at what is expected in areas such as argument, use of evidence, critical thinking, structure and presentation. If you have feedback from previous assignments, revisit it and think about what you can apply to your next piece of work.

Tip 3: Plan before you write

A clear plan really is the foundation of a strong assignment. Organise your main ideas, evidence and sources before you begin writing. Think about how each part of your assignment will contribute to answering the question and developing your argument. Good planning will help you produce a more focused, well-structured piece of work.
