On course for success? Know your subject! Know your course!

Our QM Elevate team share three tips to know your subject and course better:

Published:

Become an expert in your subject:

  • Belonging to the ‘discourse community’ for your discipline means having the knowledge, vocabulary and confidence to talk about and around your subject area. Queen Mary Students' Union has numerous clubs, societies and debating forums which means you can find some which are related to your course and your wider interests in your field. Join one or two, attend, participate, make connections with other interested students.  Remember even just speaking to other students on your course about topics you’re studying can be inspiring and helpful.

Meet your course expectations:

  • Your lecturer will have written out the Module Aims and Objectives to give you an overview of not only what will be covered in your course but what the expectations are of you by the end of the course. These are often on QMplus for each module, and it’s expected that you will read and note the goals of studying that particular module. They indicate skills and knowledge you should be familiar with by the end of the module but also how to approach your studies as you go along.

Meet Queen Mary’s high standards:

  • Lecturers refer to carefully considered Marking Criteria when assessing your work. These include the usual, such as use of sources, good referencing and structure, but also other crucial elements like ‘argument’, ‘topicality’ or ‘application to practice’ depending on your course, so you need to know the exact focus of the marking criteria for each of your modules. Again, these are likely to be on QMplus in one of the tabs for each module. Read them carefully and refer to them regularly when tackling assignments.
