Message from the Principal: welcome to the new academic year

The Principal has written to welcome all our new students to our wonderful Queen Mary community, and to welcome back our returning students for the 2022/23 academic year.

Dear student,

Welcome, or, for those of you who are returning, welcome back, to Queen Mary! This is one of the best times of the academic year, as our new students arrive, continuing students return and our campuses spring back into life after a (slightly) quieter period over the summer.

There is so much on offer for you here at Queen Mary. Whether you are a new or continuing student, as well as a fantastic academic experience there is also a wealth of co-curricular and leisure activities available to you. One of the many advantages of going to university is the opportunity to meet, and make lifelong friendships with, such a wide variety of people. At Queen Mary, we are proud to attract students from 170 different countries, alongside many students who join us from London and from across the rest of the UK. Do try and meet as many people as possible by attending events and joining student clubs and societies that bring students together from across the University.

As well as numerous events that are occurring during the week, clubs and societies are being promoted at the Welcome Fair on Thursday and Friday, which is open to all students, to see all the different opportunities on offer. Clubs and societies are run by our Students’ Union, it’s a great way to make new friends. If there is not a society that you like, then you can always apply to start your own! There is also plenty of support and advice available to you from our Student Experience team too – have a look, and make sure you take advantage of everything you can.

Returning to our educational offer, at Queen Mary, our world-leading research feeds directly into our education. Our academics are working at the cutting edge of their fields: from defining new symptoms of monkey pox, to changing the way we think about bees and advancing our understanding of the mental health resilience of refugee children, we support world-leading research across disciplines. This research directly infuses our teaching. Our academics are leading educators too, continually innovating in the lecture theatre and laboratory and winning awards for their advancements in teaching. A Queen Mary educational experience is bespoke, rigorous and challenging, and will enable you to succeed in your chosen field. We will support you every step of the way. Enjoy every minute, have a great time, but also remember to work hard!

Whether you are a new or returning student, you are all part of the proud Queen Mary family, where we look after each other. If you have any questions, just ask your School/Institute or our Student Enquiry Centre. I wish you all the very best for the first few weeks of the semester and please make sure to look after yourself.

Best wishes,

Colin
