International Pronouns Day takes place on the third Wednesday of October each year. The day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace.
A pronoun is a word used to refer to a person instead of their name. The most common pronouns are she/her and he/him, but many people choose to use different gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them.
Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people. Using people’s correct pronouns and choosing to share your own is just one way you can help create a more inclusive culture.
