International Pronouns Day 2024

International Pronouns Day takes place on the third Wednesday of October each year. The day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace.

Published:

A pronoun is a word used to refer to a person instead of their name. The most common pronouns are she/her and he/him, but many people choose to use different gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them.

Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming people. Using people’s correct pronouns and choosing to share your own is just one way you can help create a more inclusive culture.

Read more in our #PronounsMatter leaflet [PDF] and contact Queen Mary's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team if you would like to pick up a pronoun badge to wear.
