Some 33 nations were represented at an event for Queen Mary’s international postgraduate scholarship winners last week. Around 50 scholars from all three faculties attended the ceremony – which was intended to mark their success in securing international scholarships and to formally welcome them to Queen Mary.
The University’s Vice Principal, International, Professor Colin Grant, welcomed the students, noting that the Times Higher Education placed Queen Mary amongst the top 20 universities in the world for ‘international outlook’.
He continued: “Even by the standards of Queen Mary’s exceptional student body, you are among the very brightest and best and have worked hard to secure a scholarship to support you in your studies. Today’s students are tomorrow’s global leaders, and through the International Scholars Reception we recognise the contribution you will make both during your degree programme and in your future careers.”
Commonwealth Scholarship winner Sarah Hussain said: “Meeting with Vice Principal Grant and all the global co-ordinators made me feel welcome to the university, and realize how close-knit the network of university is."
As well as Commonwealth scholars, winners of Chevening and CONACyT scholarships were well-represented. Several 2018-19 Chevening alumni attended to share their experiences with the current co-hort. Representatives of the scholarship and sponsoring bodies who support many Queen Mary students also attended.
