Celebrating improvements to your campus experience
Over the past academic year, the Student Campus Experience Group has worked together to deliver a range of improvements across our campuses to enhance the student experience.
Co-chaired by Chris Shelley, Director of Student Experience, and the Students' Union President, the group brings together representatives from across the University, including Professional Services, IT Services, Estates and Facilities, and the Students' Union. Together, the group identifies opportunities to improve campus life and turns student feedback into meaningful action.
Highlights from the past year
New Family Study Room in Mile End Library

A dedicated Family Study Room has been introduced in Mile End Library to support students with caring responsibilities. The space provides a welcoming environment where students can study alongside, or while caring for, children. Features include:
- Height-adjustable desks suitable for children
- Soft seating
- Toys and games
- A curated parent and carers book collection
The room helps make study spaces more accessible and inclusive for students balancing academic and caring responsibilities.
The room is free access at the moment, so no need to book the space. However you can book this space if you want to guarantee a desk.
Accessible DDS study pod

A new Disability and Dyslexia Service (DDS) compliant study pod has been installed in Mile End Library, providing an accessible enclosed study space for students who benefit from a quieter, more private environment.
The pod includes:
- Height-adjustable desks
- Adjustable lighting
- Air control features
- An enclosed design to reduce distractions and support privacy
This investment increases accessibility and provides greater choice in study environments for students with a range of access needs.
Extended QM Social opening hours
Following student feedback, QM Social on Mile End campus now offers extended opening hours, providing more opportunities for students to connect, study and socialise on campus.
Opening Hours
- Monday to Wednesday and Friday: 9am to 11pm
- Thursday: 9am to 5pm
- Saturday and Sunday: 9am to 11pm
Women's only space
Following a successful summer pilot, a dedicated Women's Only Space will relaunch in the new academic year.
Location: Mile End Chaplaincy Yurt
Time: Tuesdays, 12 noon to 2pm
Gender neutral changing facilities
Following requests from students, Qmotion has introduced new gender neutral changing facilities to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our community. The new space provides private changing and shower facilities, offering greater choice and flexibility for students and staff, including trans and non-binary users and those who prefer additional privacy.
This improvement helps ensure that more people feel comfortable accessing sport and fitness opportunities on campus, supporting our commitment to removing barriers to participation and fostering a sense of belonging.
