"Being a mentor improves interpersonal skills such as active listening, communication, accountability, leadership, and empathy"

December 2022

First year students face many challenges such as living up to academic expectations whilst adapting to a new environment. As a mentor on the buddy scheme, I supported freshmen and accommodated them to settle into university life, as well as providing academic support where needed. I was grouped with such lovely mentees and we enjoyed our meeting sessions, texting, and activities we did together; such as study sessions at the library, going on walks, and going to restaurants. We are a group from diverse cultural backgrounds, and we embraced new cultures, which consequently exposed us with a new perspective. It also felt rewarding when I was able to help others and made a positive impact on them.

Future students should certainly apply to take part in the Buddy Scheme. Being a mentor will help strengthen and expand your knowledge. It also improves interpersonal skills such as active listening, communication, accountability, leadership, and empathy. All of these are essential and help prepare you in the future workplace. Moreover, mentoring experience can be a great addition to add to your CV and may prove to be useful in your future job applications. As for mentees, you’ll gain the support you needed by having someone to talk and reach out to. It is also an opportunity to widen your network. Furthermore, the Buddy Scheme helps embrace diversity and inclusion as QMUL is a global university, opening doors to international students. In addition, you might even develop a long-term friendship with your fellow buddies and mentors!
