Ritika, Buddy Scheme Mentor 2021

A Student with headphones on

"You start growing these skill sets you lacked previously and prove to yourself that you are capable of things that seemed impossible"

December 2021

I initially applied to become a mentor because I remembered how difficult it was for myself to settle in first year and wanted to help new freshers who were experiencing similar anxiety I had felt. Moreover, it looked like a great thing to add on a CV with all the skills that I could pick up through this opportunity. And to this date, I’m really glad I decided to become a mentor because it’s been a wonderful experience.

I was able to meet many new faces from differing backgrounds and learn about my mentees and their cultures. It was exhilarating seeing those with different perspectives and I think this opportunity opens a window for those looking to have an open mind. Of course, it was my first time becoming a mentor to anyone so there were some difficulties I was worried about - like how do I make conversations with someone I’ve never met before, or how do I carry myself so the mentees feel comfortable to open up to me about problems they have. But with time, things come naturally, and you start growing these skill sets you lacked previously and prove to yourself that you are capable of things that seemed impossible.

Sharing your experience as a student to freshers just entering the university is honestly the best thing for them to integrate into university life and so giving advice about what to do is quite simple because it’s what you have literally been through just a year ago! Remember how difficult it was for yourself when you first left college and entered university? The campus was enormous, you were unsure how assignments worked or how to make friends! Those who seek out for a buddy scheme mentor are individuals who could really need that support and a boost in courage and so - if you’ve ever felt yourself in their position- becoming a mentor is something you should definitely try out. Not only that, but after you form these bonds and friendships, they look to you for guidance and depend on you! And that sensation of being a capable mentor giving the advice they desperately needed is extremely rewarding.
