Myrto, Buddy Scheme Mentor 2024
I decided to apply to become a mentor in the Buddy Scheme because I wanted to support first-year students as they adjusted to university life, just as I needed guidance during my own transition. Moving from my home country to study at Queen Mary University was a significant change, and I remembered how challenging it was to settle into academic life. By becoming a mentor, I could offer a helping hand and ensure my mentees felt welcomed and supported throughout their first year.
Throughout the year, I connected with my mentees regularly via Vygo and held in-person meetings where I shared advice on managing university life, academic challenges, and adjusting to life in London. I offered study tips, shared my first-year notes, and guided them on navigating university resources. One of the most rewarding aspects was helping international students adapt to their new environment-whether by advising on budgeting, public transport, or simply feeling comfortable in their new surroundings.
Being a mentor also allowed me to develop valuable skills such as communication, time management, and leadership, which are not only beneficial for personal growth but also enhance your CV. The experience taught me the importance of patience, flexibility, and proactive communication.
The role of a mentor is not just about guiding others; it's about building relationships and making a positive impact within the university community. I highly recommend future students apply to become a Buddy Mentor. It's an excellent opportunity to enhance your skills, build lasting connections, and contribute to a supportive environment at Queen Mary.
