Queen Mary Level Up Mentoring Scheme

Level Up Mentoring Scheme

The Buddy Scheme is expanding! This year we are piloting a new mentoring scheme called Level Up. This scheme is for students returning for their second year at Queen Mary who might benefit from having a peer mentor to help them settle back into university life smoothly and confidently after the summer break.

Benefits for mentors

The aim of the scheme is to help your mentees re-engage socially with their peers and course, helping them get the most out of university life. Mentors do this by offering tips, practical advice and sharing their own invaluable experiences.

You can become a mentor by attending a training session over the summer, you will then create a profile on Vygo our communication and mentoring platform, where you will connect with a group of mentees to support going forward.

Mentors will arrange a Welcome Back to Second Year Meet Up on campus with their mentees during week one or week two, then continue to support and maintain engagement with their mentees on Vygo.

Being a mentor can be a rewarding experience, positively impacting others’ wellbeing. But it can also help build your own confidence as you develop communication skills and experience working with diverse groups. The scheme runs from September 2024 to January 2025, and successful completion as a mentor will be recognised on your HEAR transcript.

Benefits for mentees

On the scheme, you will connect with a fellow student who will act as your mentor on our online communication and mentoring platform Vygo. Mentors will share their own experiences and offer practical advice where possible in order to help you get the most from your time at university.

Feeling positive and happy about life at university can have a major impact on your academic performance. Hence the important role that a mentor can play, helping you to:

  • Help you settle back into second year smoothly
  • Gain practical advice, encouragement and support
  • Signpost you to services on campus that might be of benefit
  • Meet people and make new friends
