I want a mentor

Start strong. Stay connected

Starting university is a big step—and it’s normal to have questions. That’s why the Buddy Scheme is here: to help new undergraduate students settle into life at Queen Mary with support from those who’ve been in your shoes.

The scheme connects first-year students (mentees) with trained student mentors—typically in their second or third year—who offer informal, friendly guidance throughout the academic year. Whether it’s answering questions, sharing tips, or simply checking in, mentors are here to help you feel more confident, connected, and ready to make the most of your time at Queen Mary.

Why have a mentor?

Having someone to turn to can make a big difference—not just socially, but academically too. A mentor can help you:

  • Meet new people from your course and across the university
  • Learn more about Queen Mary and the local area
  • Receive practical advice, encouragement, and support
  • Get involved in Students’ Union activities like events and societies
  • Find out about useful services and resources on campus

How does it work?

Queen Mary students are amazing—and many across our schools have signed up to be mentors!

A couple of weeks before Welcome Week, you’ll receive an invitation to sign up on Vygo, our mentoring platform. There, you can choose your mentor and start chatting. If you miss the email, don’t worry—you can still sign up using your Queen Mary email address.

Your mentor will check in with you weekly and organise activities, events, or drop-in sessions throughout the year. You’ll get insider tips, friendly support, and a chance to connect with others.

If you haven’t heard from a mentor and would like one, just email us at buddyscheme@qmul.ac.uk and we’ll help you.
