Aiman, Buddy Scheme Mentor 2024
Being a mentor in the Buddy Scheme has been one of the most valuable experiences of my university journey. It offered me the opportunity to support new students as they transition into university life, and in doing so, reminded me of my own experiences during my first year. I gained a much deeper understanding of the common challenges students face, whether it’s balancing academic and social life, navigating a new campus, or simply adjusting to a different learning environment. Through offering reassurance, practical help, and being someone my mentees could turn to, I saw how much of a difference peer support can make.
One of the most rewarding aspects was connecting with my mentees and seeing their confidence grow over time. I especially enjoyed supporting students who were on the same course as me, as I could directly relate to their experiences and concerns. The Buddy Scheme not only allowed me to make meaningful connections with mentees but also with fellow mentors. I formed genuine friendships, and being part of this community has been very enjoyable and motivating.
This experience also helped me grow and develop a wide range of useful skills, including time management, leadership, and event planning. These are skills I know I’ll carry with me into future roles and opportunities. To anyone considering becoming a mentor, go for it! The Buddy Scheme is not just about helping others but it’s an experience that helps you grow too.
