We are proud to announce that Queen Mary has been awarded the EcoCampus Bronze award, an independently accredited certification recognising the University’s work towards achieving an international standard of good practice in environmental management.

EcoCampus Bronze: The EcoCampus award for the phased implementation of an Environmental Management system.

The EcoCampus Bronze award is the first step towards attaining an international certification in environmental management (ISO 14001), and demonstrates that Queen Mary has a robust sustainability policy and plan, and governance structure to support the delivery of our environmental objectives.

Throughout the pandemic, Queen Mary has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability through the publication of our Sustainability Policy and Action Plan. Staff and students have engaged in practical ways to demonstrate our commitment to a sustainable campus through canal cleans, the planting of an on campus orchard, and new recycling initiatives on campus

Queen Mary’s staff and students are actively encouraged to take part in our work towards environmental sustainability. Students have the opportunity to complete an option module on sustainable development, and all members of staff have access to participate in a CPD-accredited course on environmental sustainability skills for the workforce (ESSW). Since the launch of these courses in March 2020, over 130 members of our community have taken part.

Dr Philip Tamuno, Head of Sustainability, said: “We are pleased to be awarded this EcoCampus Bronze award, which is one of our first steps to becoming recognised as a leading environmentally friendly university. Philippa Lloyd and Ian McManus, the Chair and Vice Chair of our sustainability committee, together with leaders across our University, have continued to provide the support required to deliver our environmental objectives.”
