Adeel, Buddy Scheme Mentor 2023

"Mentoring provided a profound sense of contentment and peace, serving as a support system for both academic challenges and personal struggles"

December 2023

Joining the Buddy Scheme as a mentor has been a truly enriching experience for me. I was initially drawn to the opportunity with the hope of not only assisting first-year students in their academic journey but also establishing meaningful connections with them. This expectation materialized as I became a mentor, forming connections with multiple mentees through regular online and face-to-face sessions.

Our interactions extended beyond the academic realm, delving into discussions you could only have with your friends. Mentoring provided a profound sense of contentment and peace, serving as a support system for both academic challenges and personal struggles. The experience went beyond the formal mentorship structure, incorporating various activities such as walks by the canal, coffee meetups, and group gatherings. These activities not only contributed to a supportive environment but also enhanced the overall bonding and camaraderie among the mentor-mentee pairs.

Volunteering as a mentor has been a transformative journey, refining not only my academic support skills but also strengthening my ability to actively listen and understand diverse perspectives. These soft skills are invaluable, leaving a lasting impact not only on my CV but also on my personal growth and communication abilities.

For individuals who enjoy engaging with new people, the Buddy Scheme is an ideal avenue. It not only provides an opportunity to guide and support new students in their transition to university life but also facilitates the formation of lifelong friendships through shared experiences and mutual support. The scheme is a fulfilling journey, enriching both the mentor and mentee experiences while fostering a supportive community within the university. As a mentor, I have found immense satisfaction in contributing to the growth and well-being of my mentees, and I encourage future students to embrace this opportunity for personal and academic development.
