(It is through numbers, rather than through the senses, that music's sublimeness can be measured.)
Can we measure the sublime? Can we quantify the ineffable? Music has been known to provoke the senses, give pleasure, and sometimes move people to tears. What can mathematical models tell us about this remarkable phenomenon? What can computational tools and scientific visualisations reveal about the underlying mechanisms for musical expressivity? With careful consideration of what it is we know through performance, this lecture will deconstruct the musical structures and decisions that shape musical communication. The lecture will be interspersed with musical interludes.
Meet Our Professor
Elaine Chew joined QMUL in 2011 as Professor of Digital Media in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. A pianist and operations researcher by training, she is affiliated with the Centre for Digital Music where she co-leads the centre's research theme on music cognition, creativity, and expression.
She is the winner of a 2005 US Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for integrating music and engineering research and education, and 2007-2008 Edward, Frances, and Shirley B. Daniels Fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Elaine has been featured in the Los Angeles Philharmonic Inside the Music series; collaborations with composer Peter Child have resulted in a 2013 conceptual art piece Practicing Haydn (with Lina Vista Grønli) and recordings Doubles on Albany and Trio on Neuma.
Elaine Chew received PhD and SM degrees in Operations Research at MIT, a BAS degree in Music Performance (distinction) and Mathematical and Computational Sciences (honors) at Stanford University, and Fellowship and Licentiate diplomas in piano performance from Trinity College London.
