QMUL students go east with the Confucius Institute

Monday 1 August 2016

The QMUL Confucius Institute has teamed up with the Confucius Institute at Goldsmiths to provide our students with an exciting opportunity to take part in a two-week summer camp based in China. The programme which is running from 24 July to 7 August enables students to spend time in two of China’s largest and most dynamic cities, one week in Beijing and one week in Shanghai, exploring various aspects of the economy, culture, language and history.

The students have had the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese and calligraphy at the prestigious Tsinghua University (of which current President Xi Jinping himself is an alumnus) learning about topics such as Confucian philosophy and the history of the Chinese language. Outside of the classroom, the students have been braving the summer heat and taking part in cultural visits such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, as well as exploring all that Beijing has to offer in terms of shopping, nightlife and, of course, street food!

The Confucius Institute at QMUL also offers a variety of courses on Chinese language and culture for students who have an interest in learning more about this exciting and rapidly developing country, no matter what your level. The Institute runs six timetabled modules per week as well as bespoke modules tailored to the individual student. A number of native Mandarin-speaking teachers are available, all of whom are well experienced and have been trained to teach Chinese as a foreign language. Class sizes are small and online support is also available through QMplus, ensuring students receive the attention they need and allowing beginners to acquire the basic Chinese language skills quickly.

Courses are available under the QMUL Language Scholarship Scheme however if you are not awarded a scholarship, or wish to study a module not available under the scheme, you may fund the course yourself. The Chinese Language and Culture course is priced at £494.00 and will run for two hours per week for 22 weeks (15 credits). The Confucius Institute is currently running an Early Bird Special Offer of 25% discount to QMUL students, alumni and staff (£370.50), and a 10% discount to non-QMUL students (£444.60).
