Exploring your creativity can be a great way to de-stress and unwind as well as helping with symptoms of depression and anxiety. Developing new skills and finding ways to be playful and meet new people are great ways to get out of a rut, get over a break-up or other loss and achieve a healthy balance in life.
Many students come to university with loads of experience of all sorts of hobbies and interests which seem to have fallen by the wayside during A-levels and gap years. Often students tell us that they used to act, dance, write poetry, sing, draw or craft before their A-levels but they stopped doing so to focus on their academic studies.
When we lose touch with our creativity, we lose a way of de-stressing, of expressing ourselves and of feeling fulfilled. Sometimes it’s easy to feel that things are out of balance in our lives, that too much time is swallowed up studying, on Facebook or watching TV. You might wonder if there’s anything else you could be doing with your spare time – using your creativity could be the answer!
Creativity is part of what makes us human and it can be a source of fun, relaxation and social connection. It’s amazing how many creative ventures can be done with other like-minded people and there are many clubs, societies and casual meet-ups happening in London every day. Developing a creative hobby can be a rich source of wellbeing and there’s some research to show it can be particularly helpful if you have difficulties with depression and anxiety.
