The LIVE competition: results and implementation

The QMUL LIVE (Library Innovation, Vision and Enterprise) competition asked students to come up with ideas to improve the Library – from changes to its environment, to the service provided, the study areas available, and everything else. You can read about the finalists and winners here: my.qmul.ac.uk/news_and_events/2016/173167.html

Following the event, competition winners Hira Javaid and Jake Hall have been working with library staff to combine and implement their ideas. Creative options for managing study space are now under consideration and further work will take place over the summer vacation. It is hoped that finalised ideas around monitoring, managing and marketing study space will be implemented as a pilot scheme in 2016/17. Ideas submitted by the shortlisted entrants are already on their way to being implemented in the library at Mile End.

Library fines donated to the Queen Mary Hardship Fund

The Library makes an annual donation of library fines taken over two days to the Queen Mary Hardship Fund in support of Students' Union Rag. This year £504.79 has been donated from fines taken on 16 and 19 February.

West Smithfield Library update

Following the recent issues with the fire alarm system at West Smithfield Library, staff have received training from the QMUL Fire Officer to work within the fire safety arrangements now in place in the Pathology and Museum Building, where the library is located. Barts Health Trust has undertaken to refurbish the fire safety system and this work is ongoing.

West Smithfield is currently open and staffed Monday to Friday, 12pm to 9pm, when students may use all floors. For the present, the basement at West Smithfield Library will be available to students during staffed hours only. Outside staffed hours students are able to use the PC lab on the first floor of the Robin Brook Centre as a place to study.

Summer opening hours

The libraries will operate reduced opening hours over the summer vacation period. Please note that all libraries will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August. Term-time opening hours will resume at the Medical and Dental Libraries on 30 August and at Mile End on 26 September.
