The Principal of QMUL, Professor Simon Gaskell, emailed all students last week about how QMUL was responding to new statutory duties from the Government that require universities to have “due regard to the need to prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorism”.
In the latest edition of the Principal’s video update, Professor Gaskell is joined by Carolina Mantzalos, the President of Queen Mary Students’ Union. In the video they discuss the importance, within the context of a university, of considering and confronting ideas that are challenging, where for example they might contradict individual moral values. The discussion considers how to align a university's fundamental purpose to promote freedom of expression and enquiry with our legal obligations.
Further information about how QMUL has been consulting with staff and students and reviewing some of our existing policies and procedures has been published on my.qmul.
