Sustainability Careers Week: Monday 29 February - Friday 4 March 2016

Want to follow a career path with a positive social or environmental impact, but need to build relevant skills? Sustainability Careers week showcases a range of workshops and events to help you gain the skills and understanding required to land a job in the sector when you graduate. Highlights include the opportunity to speak with alumni and professionals working in the sector at the Sustainability Speed Meet event, and a chance to tour the solar panels on Mile End Library roof. Sustainability Careers Speed Meet, 3 March 2016, 5.30-7.30pm, Francis Bancroft 4.04/4.08:
As part of QMUL’s Green Mary Week the Sustainability and Careers teams are hosting a Sustainability Careers Speed Meet on 3 March from 5.30-7.30pm for those looking to work in the Environmental or Sustainability sector. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your understanding of the Environmental and Sustainability sectors before you graduate.  The event will provide you with the opportunity to speak face-to-face with alumni and professionals working in the sector, learn about different job options, and find out about the range skills and characteristics valued by employers. Speakers will attend from a range of industries, including:

  • Sustainability Policy, Engagement and Communications roles
  • Sustainable Construction and Engineering roles
  • Environmental Management roles and Environmental Consultancy

Careers in Energy and Carbon Management: Tour QMUL’s solar PV panels at this talk on careers in energy and carbon management, 1 March, 1-2pm
As part of QMUL’s Green Mary Week the Sustainability team are providing QMUL students with the opportunity to tour the solar PV (photovoltaic) panels on Mile End Library roof, whilst receiving a talk about careers in energy and carbon management. This is a great chance to develop your understanding of the skills it takes to reduce an organisation’s carbon footprint and energy consumption. The event will be led by QMUL’s own Energy Reduction Manager, Kerry Horvath, a qualified BREEAM assessor with extensive knowledge of energy and carbon management. You will have the chance to ask her questions about her career throughout the session.

Careers in Sustainability Communications and Engagement: Key skills workshop, 2 March, 1-2pm, Queens’ E303
As part of QMUL’s Green Mary week the Sustainability team are providing QMUL students with the opportunity to find out about the key elements of sustainability engagement and communications roles in an interactive workshop. This is a great chance to develop your understanding of the skills it takes to engage organisations, staff or customers in sustainability, and the importance of effective communications planning to achieve these goals. This session will have a practical focus, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and apply the skills you learn about. This event is led by Jess Hawes, QMUL’s Sustainability Engagement Manager.

Sustainability Careers Panel: Q&A with QMUL’s Sustainability team, 3 March, 1-2pm
As part of QMUL’s Green Mary Week the Sustainability team are providing you with the opportunity to quiz them about their varied roles and careers within the sustainability sector. With over 45 year’s professional experience in total, the QMUL Sustainability team have diverse career histories. This is a great chance to ask honest and open questions, whether these are about how to start your career in sustainability, what is entailed in the work of a sustainability team, or the key skills employers might be looking for.

The team includes:
-Andrew Flett, Assistant Director (Sustainability): Andrew is the team’s senior manager, and formerly worked as the Global Head of Sustainability at Barclays. He is responsible for ensuring the team works effectively, and delivers in line with our strategic aims.
-Kerry Horvath, Energy Reduction Manager: Kerry manages QMUL’s carbon and energy reduction programmes, has extensive experience of Energy and Environmental Management Systems, and is a qualified BREEAM assessor. She has been working in sustainability roles for 5 years.
-Jess Hawes, Sustainability Engagement Manager: Jess is responsible for providing opportunities which engage students and staff in sustainability at QMUL. She also handles the team’s communications. She has been working in the sector for 18 months.
- Sara Aziz, Sustainability and Energy Project Assistant: Sara looks after the team’s work on sustainable transport, and also assists Kerry in ensuring the delivery of the energy and carbon reduction programme. She started working in the sector in summer 2015, so can give great advice to recent or soon-to-be graduates
