The Fashion Society was only founded this year but it has already won the Students' Union’s Society of the Week. We caught up with society president, Kajal Kumar, to find out more.
When was the society created?
The society was founded by myself and a few friends just this academic year, 2015/16. I felt like QMUL needs a Fashion Society! Although we just started up this year, the response from students has been amazing!
What kind of events do you hold for your members?
We run a wide range of events to cater for all interests. We hold regular fashion skills sessions, including photography, modelling, blogging, design, make-up and events. These are a chance for all members to learn a new skill or develop an existing one, in sessions led by our experts. In addition to this, we also organise guest talks, exhibition visits, Topshop VIP shopping experiences, style watch, London Fashion Week events and fashion photo shoots, our annual runway and Drapers socials!
As a new society you have excelled, running great events for your members and engaging with students and the SU – how do you feel about this?
I really give all the credit to our members, without them this society would be nothing! Students make us who we are and they’ve brought us this far.
Fashion Society won Society of the Week at QMSU – how did that feel?
It felt wonderful! QMSU really supports the Fashion Society with everything we do and new initiatives we bring out. It was brilliant to be recognised as Society of the Week. Rachel Nelms and Carley Owen (Societies Coordinators) come up with some brilliant ideas such as our Christmas jumper contest and they are a pleasure to work with.
The 2016 RAG Fashion Show sounds brilliant. Can you tell us more?
Our 2016 RAG (Raising and Giving) Fashion show is our biggest event of the year. It will take place in the Great Hall, Mile End campus on Saturday 5 March 2016! I’m super excited and hope to make it very open, involving lots of other societies and showcasing international fashion across QMUL. We will be working with a sustainable fashion brand showcasing sustainable collections.
The event will be charity based, so we’re working to raise money for St John Ambulance and Richard’s House Children’s Hospice. We will also showcase rising talent - many QMUL students are performers and this is their chance to get recognised!
All models, designers, photographers, stage specialists, make-up artists, etc will be QMUL students and we hope to hold auditions very soon! This is your chance to get involved and show your love for fashion! Contact email@example.com if you’re interested.
As president of the society, what do you enjoy most about your society?
I love doing something for my fellow fashion lovers (whether that’s organising events or something else) and meeting people who love fashion as much as me. It’s the best feeling when a member comes up to you and says how happy they are that they joined. Watching friendships form over the course of the year makes me so glad. Fashion has brought Drama students together with Economics students.
Are there any achievements or highlights of the society that you would like to mention?
We were proud to run the Christmas jumper contest for QMSU at the Queen Merry market in December. This was really fun as we went around campus spotting the most festive people! We even found an elf (thank you, Miranda Black!).
We welcomed a London Fashion Week (LFW) designer to QMUL last term, when she gave a guest talk to our students. She was so lovely and our members greatly benefitted from her talk.
In addition, the Bloggers’ team was proud to launch our very own Tumblr site (www.qmfashion.tumblr.com), which is now up and running. We will be making it even more fab, this term!
Lastly, our Artistic Director Corinna Bordoli was featured in the October issue of Vogue UK and she will be modelling in the SS16 LFW shows in London and Paris this February. We are so proud! She’s now passing her skills onto new models at our skills sessions.
Any exciting plans for the future?
This term is going to be even more fabulous! With our bigger events underway, such as our 2016 RAG Fashion Show, LFW discounted trip (thanks to Corinna), Drapers fashion night, guest talk collaborations, socials, fashion skills sessions, our AGM and much more!
How do you plan to expand your society over the coming years?
We hope to collaborate more with other societies, supporting them and growing our student base. We want to collaborate with the Photography Society, beauty and make-up, the Dance Company and many more!
Where can students find out more and keep up to date with your society?
