QMUL is working to dramatically decrease the amount of waste we send to landfill over the coming years, with an aim to become a zero waste-to-landfill university by 2017. Around 50 per cent of the waste that QMUL currently sends to landfill could be recycled.
To achieve this goal, we are overhauling our waste strategy. A large contributor to our low recycling rates is the number of under-desk bins we have in our offices, so over the next few months, we will be introducing new centralised recycling points to replace under-desk bins in offices at the Mile End campus. The Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square campuses will follow soon.
Recycling bins have already been rolled out across student accommodation and have been working well. A trial in teaching rooms started before the Christmas break and went well, so the roll out into offices will continue into 2016.
