Drama student makes case to protect iconic pub

Friday 30 October 2015

Ben Walters, a PhD student in Drama, has played a leading role in the campaign to get the Royal Vauxhall Tavern listed because of its LGBTQ heritage. In the case report, Historic England describes the pub as ‘an enduring symbol of the confidence of the gay community in London for which it possesses strong historic interest’. It’s the first building to be listed because of its LGBTQ history.

Ben is undertaking an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Award with Duckie, a queer collective who have been putting on performance events at the pub since 1995. You can read the story of the campaign on the Royal Vauxhall Tavern website.
