QMUL Alumni Network News

Wednesday 27 May 2015

The third issue of QMUL Alumni Network News is now available. In this digest, which is produced at the end of each semester, you will find out more about how alumni* are involved in the life of the university, from attending events to sharing their news and you can learn about the ways in which alumni are actively supporting the university and you, our current students. Below is a selection of articles from the newsletter, to read it in full click here

*Alumni (noun, plural) are the former students or graduates of a school, college or university. Alumnus is the masculine form, alumna is the feminine form of the noun.

Yesterday’s students helping you tomorrow

The Development team has received 48 applications for project grants to be distributed from the Annual Fund in the next academic year. The Annual Fund supports all kinds of projects, as long as they make a difference to students in one of the areas of employability, community and financial support for students. The funds can be used to build new skills, volunteer and help others or provide bursaries.

Thanks to the generous support of over 1,000 alumni, staff and friends of Queen Mary, 22 projects were funded in 2014/15, 16 students received a scholarship and we have been able to provide over 15 bursaries for students experiencing financial hardship. We are extremely grateful to alumni who continue to support the Annual Fund and help us to open new doors and widen opportunities for you, our students!

MD of McLaren Applied Technologies admires QMUL’s forward-thinking approach

The Institute of Bioengineering, in collaboration with the Materials Research Institute, hosted a high-profile visit from alumnus and Managing Director of McLaren Applied Technologies, Dr Geoff McGrath (Mechanical Engineering, 1987; PhD, 1991) at the end of April. Dr McGrath’s lecture on the company’s innovative activities was delivered to a packed audience in the GO Jones Lecture Theatre on our Mile End campus, giving many of our young students a vision of what it can be like to work in a highly interdisciplinary, hi-tech company.

Many alumni, like Dr McGrath, volunteer for us: they give up their time to come and talk to you, our students, about their careers, offer internships, sit on boards and committees, organise and host events, and act as Ambassadors.

Keep an eye on your School's events programme to make sure you don't miss out on great networking opportunities like this!

Attention: Final year students!
