One-Day Volunteering at QMUL

Friday 12 September 2014

There are all sorts of ways to get involved in Volunteering during your time at Queen Mary! Throughout the year, students are recruited for a whole host of One-Day Volunteering opportunities. This means that even if you have a busy timetable and cannot commit to a long-term project, you can still get involved!

QMUL’s volunteering opportunities take place in a wide range of settings, including homeless shelters, hospitals, farms, schools and charities. When it’s a one-day opportunity, all you have to do is apply online and a Volunteering Assistant will contact you to pass on the details of a meeting points. Then, the group of volunteers will meet on campus and travel over to the event together, and volunteer as a group. It is a great way to meet other QMUL students, while exploring a new part of London and trying something new… all the while making a difference!

Some of the upcoming opportunities for the One-Day Volunteering Programme are as follows:

1 October: Clothing Challenge, Whitechapel Mission
Volunteers will be sorting, measuring, sizing, and hanging donated clothing, at the Whitechapel Mission, ready for distribution to the local homeless.

8 October: Breakfast Challenge, Whitechapel Mission
Support the Whitechapel Mission to cook and serve breakfast for the 300 homeless people they have come through their doors each day.

10 October: NBFA Tea Party at Royal Chelsea Hospital
Serve tea and have a good ol’ chat (and maybe even a dance) with the guests attending a tea party for older people.

12 October: Alternative Hair Show, Royal Albert Hall
Welcome guests at this spectacular annual show, held at the Royal Albert Hall, which raises millions for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research UK.

12 October: Royal Parks Half Marathon
As stewards and water distributers, QMSU Volunteers will play a key function in the smooth-running of annual charity run which raises thousands of pounds a year to support the upkeep of London's amazing green urban spaces.

17 October: Glow Fun Run, Mile End Park
A charity event that raises funding for the Royal Institute of Blind People. Various volunteer roles are available, including stewarding and spraying runners with neon paint.

…and the list does go on!
