Arrangements for protecting your health at QMUL

Friday 12 September 2014

For those of you who are new students, you will have received information about protecting your health at QMUL in the pre-enrolment mailings, including the importance of registering with a GP and information about the student health services available on campus. For those of you returning to QMUL, you should already be registered with a GP and will, we hope, be fully aware of what medical support is available.

Earlier this year, there was an outbreak of the Ebola virus in parts of West Africa, specifically Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and more recently Nigeria. The risk of Ebola arriving in the UK is considered very low, but with students arriving on campus from all over the world, we have a duty to make sure that we have taken every precaution to look after your health and wellbeing. The arrangements are not new and are there to deal with any emergency, including all infectious diseases, not just Ebola.

For anyone living on campus coming from Guinea, Sierra Leone or Liberia, or who has visited those countries in the past three weeks, and who becomes unwell with symptoms of fever, diarrhoea/vomiting and weakness, please 3333 the on campus emergency number to report concerns and request an ambulance. Students living off-campus should phone for an ambulance on 999. You will be advised on what you should do and medical help will be organised, for which in cases of emergency treatment there is no charge.

We would stress that the UK Government and Public Health England are confident that the likelihood of Ebola coming into this country is remote. There is much more information on Ebola on the NHS Choices website: www.nhs.uk/conditions/ebola-virus/pages/ebola-virus

If you have any questions about the student health services on campus or how to register with a GP, please speak with a member of the enrolment team.

Following enrolment, you can get information on our student health services by visiting www.studenthealth.qmul.ac.uk. Our Student Enquiry Centre will also be able to answer all of your questions about life at QMUL. You can find them in the Queens’ Building or you can email the team at studentenquiry@qmul.ac.uk.

Best wishes
