Time Out Campaign 2014

The weeks leading up to deadlines for final essays and dissertations - as well as the end of semester exams - can be stressful and nerve-wracking for students. Queen Mary Students’ Union (QMSU) know the strain you are under and have organised the Time Out campaign to target and minimise stress during the coming months. The campaign includes a variety of relaxing and fun activities to help keep you happy and healthy, as well as events to support your studies including guidance and advice sessions. The Students’ Union has tried to make the events as accessible as possible amidst studying and revising by ensuring that all the events are free of charge and take place within Queen Mary’s Mile End campus. The campaign will begin in late April and will go right through until June.

The events include playing with puppies from the Guide Dogs Trust, film nights, game nights, meditation, creative workshops, stress targeting workshops and exercise classes. Every student deals with stress in their own way and the Students’ Union have endeavoured to create a variety of events to offer support, meaning there is something for everyone! Events for a break

Puppies Stress Relief
During the week of 22 April, puppies from the Guide Dogs Trust will be visiting QM’s students! When revision is getting on top of you, cuddling the puppies will be a great way to give yourself a break. This will take place in the Time Out room and the exact time is yet to be confirmed.

Mindfulness Meditation
This is taking place on Monday 12, 19 and 26 May from 12.30-1.15pm in the Chaplaincy. These sessions aim to develop breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques to keep you calm even under pressure.

Disney And Pixar Film Nights
The screenings will take place on Monday evenings at 7.30pm during April, May and June in the Chaplaincy. The films have been carefully selected to get you laughing and to help you ‘forget about your worries and your strife!’  The films are Toy Story 3 (28 April), Jungle Book (5 May), Beauty and the Beast (12 May), Wall-E (19 May), Little Mermaid (26 May) and Frozen (2 June).

Community TV Series
Screenings of the popular American TV series are taking place in the Chaplaincy every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8.00-9.00pm.

Games Nights
These events will take place on Friday evenings at 7.30-10.00pm on 9, 16, 23 and 30 May in the Chaplaincy. There will be a variety of board games available to play, helping you focus on something other than exams!

Film Breaks
Screenings of short films will take place on Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 April at 5.30-6.30pm in the Library Seminar Room. The films are a mixture of different styles and genres from around the world, including Copy Shop, The Most Beautiful Man in the World and UK Images.

Creative Thursdays  
On Thursday afternoons from 1.00-2.00pm on 8, 15, 22 and 29 May there will be creative spaces for students in the Time Out Room of the QMSU Hub. Students are encouraged to get creative by doing painting, photography, poetry or music, and it will make a great change of scenery from the library!

Yoga Classes
Every Wednesday in May from 1.00-2.00pm there will be free yoga classes in the Time Out Room of the QMSU Hub. Yoga is a great way to refresh your body and mind when you might be feeling the pressure.

Running Club
Join the QM Running Club for a run in QMotion that can help keep your body and mind fit and focused.  Sessions are 12.15pm every Wednesday during April and May.

Events for your studying

Drop-in sessions
Every weekday starting Tuesday 22 April all students can drop into the Help Zone in Mile End Library to seek help, advice and guidance on their subject from 2.00-5.00pm. Maths, Statistics and Science students can drop into the Drop-in Study Centre on the first floor of the library from 12.00-2.00pm for specialised advice, or from 6.00-8.00pm in the Library’s Help Zone.

Managing Exam Stress workshop
On 23 April you can attend a 90 minute workshop which will help you to identify how stress affects your life and to develop ideas to target and minimalise it. If you are interested, be sure to email welfare@qmul.ac.uk to book your slot in advance.

Reading and Writing Support
There will be several support sessions on 22-23 April and 28 April-2 May where you are invited to drop in with a piece of writing that you need guidance on. The sessions are two hours long and will be attended by advisors who can help to guide your work. Find them in the Drop-in-Centre in Mile End Library. This is a great chance to get a fresh pair of eyes to look at your work and give you advice that you might not have thought of!

1-2-1 Tutorials for Study Skills
These sessions are available from Monday to Friday from March through to May in the Learning Development Tutorial Room. These are 50 minute sessions to help you with your specific academic needs. Email academicstudytutorials@qmul.ac.uk to book your time.

Stationary Amnesty
A one off event on Wednesday 23 April is offering you free stationary that has been donated from departments around the university.
