Merger Cup 2014

Queen Mary’s annual sports competition, the Merger Cup, took place on Saturday 15 March. Barts and The London Student Association (BLSA) and Queen Mary Students’ Union went head to head in a number of sports competitions, acquiring points as they went along for every win or draw. The sports involved included boating, hockey, rugby, tennis, football and swimming. BLSA were named the Merger Cup Champions 2014 with a score of 29 compared to QM’s 24.

A listing of fixtures was published and students were invited to come and show their support for their sports teams. It was a warm and sunny day and there was a great turn out at the sporting events, with BLSA supporters dressed in black and white and QM supporters in blue and yellow, not to mention colourful face paint, balloons and signs. £2 Merger Cup t-shirts are still available from the QMSU website if you want to have a keepsake from the day! All of the photographs taken throughout the event were published on QMSU Sport’s Facebook page and can be viewed here. Organisers, competitors and supporters were tweeting throughout the day, using #qmmergercup or #blmergercup.

The day’s entertainment featured live music from London based rock trio El Deyma. On top of this, students provided entertainment, including cheerleading from the QM Angels, performances from QM Dance troops, boxing demonstrations, a tug of war competition and live music from societies. There was also a Vintage Crepe van, which added to the atmosphere while catering to competitors and their supporters. The sports venues included QMotion on Mile End Campus, Redbridge Sports and Leisure Centre, Chislehurst Sports Ground, Farringtons School and Westway Sports Centre. To finish off the day, Mile End campus’ Drapers hosted the after party where the scores and winners were announced.

Well done to all the students who were involved, and congratulations to BLSA for winning the title! A full list of teams can be seen here. If you would like to read about one of the sports clubs that was involved, check out our profile of the QMBL Swimming Club.
