The Asian Dance Society is one our newest societies. It offers you the opportunity to learn a range of dance techniques and styles that you may not have had the chance to try before, in a friendly and fun atmosphere. Experienced QM students teach dance classes for a variety of dance styles, with both Eastern and Western influences, from Bollywood to Ballet.
The Society are keen to keep growing and expanding. If you are already a skilled dancer, you might want to get involved in the teaching side of the society! They are looking for choreographers from any and all dance styles, including hip hop, salsa or ballroom.
The Society are also taking opportunities to perform their new skills, with their Bollywood team soon to be performing at the Paint Our World Charity Mela 2014, organised by the QM Indian Cultural Society on Thursday 27 February. They also hope to participate in the upcoming QM's Got Talent 2014, organised by QM Enactus. They are currently planning a society social where dancers can perform their new skills alongside their choreographers, dress up in their ethnic clothes and enjoy an evening of western and eastern music. Keep an eye out on their Twitter and Facebook for upcoming performances this semester!
Shubhangi Mohan, President of the Asian Dance Society, thinks the society is about more than just learning new skills: ‘It's an opportunity for students to learn about different cultures, languages and dance forms. It's also a great place to meet new people who share the same taste! These classes will help you to put aside any stress, remain active and build your confidence, as dance is an enjoyable and unique form of exercise.’
The Society run the following classes so far:
- Bollywood - Every Friday – 3.00 to 4.00pm - QMotion Active Dance Studio
- Bharatanatyam - Every Friday – 4.00 to 5.00pm - QMotion Active Dance Studio
- Ballet and Contemporary - Every Monday – 1.00 to 2.30pm - BLSA Dance Studio
No previous experience is necessary – just come along to one of the sessions and prepare to have some fun whilst staying fit and meeting new people! Follow what they are up to on their Twitter or Facebook. Membership is only £3 for the semester and you can join on the QMSU website.
