Student update: recent attacks on websites

Tuesday 28 January 2014

A message sent to all students by Mike Shore-Nye, Chief Operating Officer, Queen Mary University of London on Tuesday 28 January.

Dear Student

Late last week Queen Mary was attacked by the group ‘Anonymous’ with School websites and databases targeted. An intensive investigation has been taking place since the attack and over the weekend to identify which areas were infiltrated. The evidence suggests that websites and databases belonging to a small number of schools were infiltrated and it is possible that students’ data from those Schools were viewed and copied. Those students who may have been affected by this event have been informed.

Our own investigations and those of the National Cyber Crime Unit are on-going and we will update students when any additional information comes to light.

It is understood that Queen Mary was targeted by ‘Anonymous’ because of the group’s interpretation of some of our research being undertaken at Queen Mary.

Mike Shore-Nye

Chief Operating Officer
Queen Mary University of London
