Queen Mary Student Union’s one-day volunteering placements are a really useful way of engaging with the local community and experiencing a range of volunteering opportunities, without having to commit on a regular basis. It’s also a great chance to get to know other students from around QM.
Since September 2013 QM students have contributed 1100 hours of their time at events hosted by charities in the local and wider London community. During December alone, 70 students volunteered at a range of events that either directly benefited the lives of, or raised funds and awareness for, those in need.
2013’s highlight events included setting up at the NSPCC Charity Ball, marshalling at the Santa Fun Run, the Royal Parks Half Marathon and at Centre Point Homeless Charity’s sponsored Sleep Out, running children’s activities at St. John’s Hospice Christmas Fair, and helping out at a Chilli Festival at Spitalfield’s City Farm.
This term QMSU Volunteering, the Students’ Union’s Volunteering Service, will be recruiting students to volunteer to cook breakfast for the homeless at Whitechapel Mission and for the Barnardo’s Trolley Dash – which involves running around Kensington Olympia at the close of the Toy Fair, collecting as many toys as possible for children’s centres in London and the South East.
