Take control of your future with help from QM Careers and Enterprise Centre

Thursday 2 January 2014

It is easy to feel like time flies by you when you’re at university – before you know it, here we are in 2014 and graduation is that much closer. All students are inevitably going to feel anxious about getting a job after they finish their degree, but QM Careers and Enterprise Centre can help open up as many opportunities for you as possible with a range of information fairs, forums, talks, training sessions and workshops taking place in 2014. Since September 2013, 110 careers events have already taken place, including workshops to develop your techniques to apply for roles, The Politics and Practice seminar sessions, a ‘Career in Conversation’ talk with a successful publisher, three careers fairs,  talks from recent alumni, and the ‘Start Up, Stand Up’ event with speakers from ’Tech City’ start ups.

These events are excellent chances for you to improve your prospects and employability, and to consider what direction you might want to go in after university. Recent careers events have seen a huge surge in participation. James Weaver, QM’s Employer Engagement Manager, comments: ‘We have seen a massive uptake in students using all our services. We’ve all been  impressed by the quality of questions being asked by students to recruiters. Students are really preparing themselves, and making the most of these opportunities.’

These events are also a great opportunity to network with the recruiters and your potential employers. James stresses the importance of these experiences: ‘I think something that students often don’t realise is the people on the panel, at the fair, or leading the workshop will probably be reviewing your application when you submit it. If you are genuinely serious about working in a particular business and you see them on campus, it is probably worth coming along and trying to grab a few minutes with the person leading the session and asking for their details. We make a space for this at all our events, but it is up to students to take the step into it.’

Coming up:

Things to look out for over the next couple of months include:

  • Mock Interview sessions that give you lots of hints and tips on improving your interview technique.
  • Talks given by alumni returning to QM to discuss their experiences are always very popular, so there will be more of these over the coming months.
  • There will also be a hack event with the popular music app Shazam offering students a brilliant chance to get creative while learning about the type of work available in a tech start up.
  • A range of events for students looking to start their own business.

Keep an eye out for these events and many more on the Careers website. Make sure you get involved - events like these are the key to giving you the skills and confidence to stand out during the application process!
