QM student cheerleaders to take on world's best

Thursday 2 May 2013

QM Angels, QM’s student cheerleading society have seen off stiff competition at both university and national championships to make it to the European Cheer Union (ECU) Championships, taking place in Glasgow in June. In addition to the European Championships, the team has already been guaranteed a place at the University World Championships in Florida in January 2014.

The team competed at the British Cheerleading Association (BCA) University Nationals in March. The University Nationals is the biggest university competition in the U.K., with university teams from all across the country coming to together to compete in all different levels. QM Angels competed in Co-Ed (mixed team) categories for Level 3 and Level 6, coming first in both categories. The team also won first place for the Co-Ed Level 3 Group Stunt and second place for our All-Girl Level 2 Group Stunt. The Co-Ed Level 3 team won the title of 2013 University National Grand Champions, with the highest score out of all the teams in every level.

QM Angels also competed in the BCA National Championships in March which is open to all universities and Allstar (non university) cheerleading teams from all across the country. Again, the team came first in the Co-Ed Level 3 (against 6 other teams) and Co-Ed Level 6 categories, and won first place for both the Co-Ed Level 3 Group Stunt and All-Girl Level 2 Group Stunt.

The Angels will be taking on the European Cheer Union Championships in June, taking 25 athletes to the competition, whilst also revising hard for their exams. Emma Tremble, QM Angels President, spoke about the competition and the team’s chances: ‘We will competing in both the Level 6 Co-Ed cheer category, and the Level 6 Co-Ed group stunt routine, up against the best Co-Ed Level 6 teams from all across Europe, including university and Allstar teams. As we haven’t yet competed directly against any Level 6 teams - as we are the first university team to compete in this level - we are very excited to see how we do against other teams. The competition will be very tough but we have high hopes for our chances!’

The team has already been guaranteed a place at the University World Championships taking place in Florida in January 2014.

Farnoush Chehraz, QM Angels Level 6 Captain spoke of the team’s achievements so far: ‘We’ve worked really hard this season as a Club and the Students’ Union have supported us a lot. Together with a group of dedicated members and some talented freshers we’ve been able to up the level this year. The University Nationals and National Championships in March was a very successful competition, with us coming back with seven first place trophies, a second place trophy, and the Grand Champions trophy.

‘Our Level 6 team will now compete at the European Cheer Union Championships in June and the World University Cheerleading Championships at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in January 2014. We are extremely excited about both of these competitions and we are very proud of what we have managed to achieve this year.’

Ellen Kiely, QMSU Vice President, Welfare and former QM Angel, said: ‘Queen Mary Angels have really gone from strength to strength over the last few years. Working with students who have never had any experience of cheerleading before, the club is quickly filling up our trophy cabinets. We are very proud of them and wish them the best of luck in Glasgow and Florida!’

QM Angels has been running since 2005, and initially started off as a dance team. The team moved on to learning cheerleading stunting skills in 2008 and began competing in full cheerleading competitions in 2009. They currently have 95 people signed up to the cheerleading club, and membership has been growing every year.  Any student from QM is welcome to come along and try cheerleading out. Most people who join the team have no experience in cheerleading, dance or gymnastics, so the team works with everyone from scratch.
