IT services - updates for returning students

Thursday 19 September 2013

QM is continuing to invest in new IT services to enhance and personalise your experience. From upgrading the student desktop to Windows 8; easier wi-fi set up; introduction of wireless printing; new features in QMplus and extended opening hours and service updates, there’s been lots of improvements to find out about!

Windows 8 upgrade
The student teaching IT service has been upgraded to Windows 8, with benefits including a personalised, secure desktop with shortcuts to your course apps, customised settings and one log in to access files and apps instead of two.  For more information about these changes and the benefits, please go to my.qmul.

IT Services has installed the new operating system on more than 1,300 desktops across all campuses in computer labs, libraries and The Hive. We’ve put together some useful how-tos from Microsoft that will help you navigate your way around the new desktop. You can download the guide here: How to Guide - Getting to know Windows 8.

Setting up eduroam wi-fi is easier
If you have bought a new personal computer or mobile device over the holidays, it is now much easier to set it up to connect to the eduroam wi-fi network. Eduroam is our preferred method for wi-fi access as it is secure and should not require you to sign in each time you want to access the Internet. It is also accessible at other participating institutions.

To start, view available wireless networks on your device and connect to “setup-eduroam”. Launch a web browser and you will be guided through the setup process. Once you follow these steps, you will automatically be connected to the eduroam network.

For more information, go to: www.its.qmul.ac.uk/network-services/Eduroam

We’ve also expanded the coverage of the eduroam wi-fi network and it is now available in the Trust Tower on the Whitechapel campus.

Wireless printing
A new wireless print service (EveryonePrint) is available. This replaces the old service, which required you to download and install drivers onto their devices. Users can sign in to the wireless print service from anywhere in the world with web access.

Once submitted, you have 24 hours to collect sent jobs. Print outs can be collected from any Student Service Printer or Library Photocopier and are paid for using QM iPay account.

To access the service, simply go to: https://eprint.stu.qmul.ac.uk and login in with your QM username and password.

New features in QMplus
QMplus is now the online learning environment for the entire university. We have updated the site over the summer to have lots of new features including blog and wiki activities and landing pages which display relevant faculty and school information to students. There are also a number of video tutorials to help you get the most out of QMplus.

The Blackboard online learning environment is no longer available. Courses within Undergraduate Medicine (MBBS) in the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry that were present on Blackboard during the 2012/13 academic year will be present on QMplus from 2013.
