Wednesday 7 August 2013
From 1 August 2013, Queen Mary University of London started awarding our own degrees to undergraduate and postgraduate students – previously we awarded University of London degrees. The Principal of Queen Mary, Professor Simon Gaskell, wrote to all students today, (Wednesday 7 August) with further information about the changes.
The degree will still say University of London on the certificate, and this change will not affect any arrangements with employers, sponsors or funders. We expect to start awarding the first Queen Mary University of London degrees in 2014.
What does this mean for me?
If you started studying with us in 2012 or earlier you'll be able to choose whether you want to graduate with a Queen Mary University of London or University of London degree when you complete re-enrolment.
If you started studying with us from September 2013, you’ll be able to choose whether you want to graduate with a Queen Mary University of London or University of London degree during pre-enrolment. The deadline for making this choice is 13 December 2013.
All students starting in September 2014 onwards will be awarded a Queen Mary University of London degree.
What's the difference?
Your degree will still be from the University of London, and this name will still appear on your degree certificate – but the main change is that your certificate will now also mention Queen Mary University of London too.
The degree certificates will look different, and feature our crest rather than the University of London’s. We’ll also be introducing new gowns – and you can be part of the process of choosing the designs. More information on the gown designs will follow soon.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes. These changes don’t affect students on joint degrees with other institutions, such BUPT or Nanchang. We are talking with those institutions about our degree awarding powers and will only make changes in partnership with them.
