Tuesday 25 June 2013
I’m not at all clear how we seem to be almost halfway through 2013, but that is where we are! It is terrifying how the months role by rapidly. Just before we all disappear on our various summer jaunts, I wanted to use this opportunity to allay any anxieties people might have about the current “re-organisation” of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. This process is very different to the one we underwent last year. We are literally only trying to re-focus the organisational structure of the School. There is absolutely no intention of using it as a back door way of making savings in jobs.
What is proposed is the creation four educational Schools: a School of Medicine; a School of Dentistry; a School of Biomedical Sciences and Population Studies (for non-clinical undergraduate degrees), and a School of Graduate Studies. We believe this will represent a more effective way of delivering education efficiently. We want to make the link between delivery of quality education and recognition and reward much more transparent - which can only be a good thing.
I said last year during the restructure process that I felt that the student body would see no impact from that process, either negative or positive. I really do believe this was true. If the student body notices anything following the re-organisation, I believe it will only be a slow improvement in the quality of their education. We are planning an open meeting for students to discuss this at which we can go into greater detail – please see the details below. However, I really do want to use this opportunity to allay anxieties you might have.
Whatever you do during this summer I hope you have a great time and enjoy any fragments of pleasant weather we happen to be granted. Judging by the pace at which the first half of the year has gone, it will be a short time before the nights have drawn in, the snow is on the ground and Christmas beckons. So do enjoy your summer.
