Transformation of Mathematical Sciences Building begins

Works are underway to transform the Mathematical Sciences building on the Mile End campus, including complete internal refurbishment, recladding of the existing tower and a single storey extension to the north.

24 January 2018

Home to the School of Mathematical Sciences, the £18m project will fully modernise the building which has been a familiar site on the Mile End Road since the 1960s, due in part to its iconic Penrose tiling

Boris Khoruzhenko, Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences, commented: “The School is delighted that work is now underway on the Maths Building. We are already looking forward to returning next year to a transformed building where students, staff and visitors can work together in a fantastic new environment. It will make a huge difference to the School to have a state-of-the-art space to work and study in.”

Estates and Facilities are working with GRAHAM Construction to deliver an inspiring, collaborative space for students and staff of the School of Mathematical Sciences. The project includes the provision of high-quality teaching spaces, a range of private and group study areas and a new social space to provide an informal hub for School-related events and activities. Postgraduate taught students will benefit from a dedicated computer lab and additional study space.

Important information about works in Godward Square (Drapers Square)

  • Now that the main refurbishment works are underway, there will inevitably be some noise in the area immediately surrounding the construction site, particularly for those based in the Informatics Teaching Laboratories (ITL), Engineering Building and Computer Science Building. Estates and Facilities will seek to minimise the impact of the building work to staff, students and visitors. However, it will not be possible to stop the construction, for given periods, because of the tight schedule to finish the works. If you do have any concerns, please get in touch with the Estates Helpdesk at eaf-helpdesk@qmul.ac.uk.
  • Pedestrian access to Godward Square from Mile End Road is now closed except on evenings when events are planned at Drapers' Bar. Access will be restricted until completion of the refurbishment of the Mathematical Sciences building in April 2019.
  • Additional lighting is being installed around Godward Square, and signage is being put up around the site highlighting access arrangements for the ITL, Computer Science Building, Qmotion, Drapers’ Bar and Union Shop to help students, staff and visitors.

For more information about the project, please contact Emmanuel Nibo, Senior Project Manager at e.w.nibo@qmul.ac.uk.
