QMUL Model Extra

In addition to, and complementing, your credit-bearing QMUL Model modules run by Schools or Institutes, you can choose to apply for these fantastic opportunities:

QConsult – take on a consultancy project for a real business or charity.

InQUBEate – build the skills to launch a business or social enterprise.

QInsight  Civil Service Fast Stream – explore the Civil Service, meet the staff and experience their recruitment methods.

QTaster learn about different potential careers by visiting various graduate employers.

Leadership, Management and Professional Skills - develop an understanding of management and the working environment, and refine your skills that will help you succeed through group-based learning.

These QMUL Model Extra opportunities are non-credit-bearing, only open to Queen Mary students, and take place once a week over a semester – see the descriptions below for more details.

Who are they for?

These are open to all undergraduate students who will be studying at Queen Mary in the 2018/19 academic year and not in their first year. You may be from any School or Institute, so you’ll meet people from different programmes and disciplines. Whatever your areas of study, you’ll have an equal chance in the application process.

Why should I apply?

Successful completion of QMUL Model Extra opportunities will appear on your HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Record). You’ll benefit from face-to-face coaching from professional experts who will help you apply what you’ve learnt so that you can get ahead. The QMUL Model Extra opportunities are also mapped to QMUL Model themes so you can be confident that they’ve been designed and structured to complement the development of your professional skills.

These opportunities are offered as an added extra to the QMUL Model, which broadens opportunities for Queen Mary undergraduates within and beyond higher education.

How do I apply?

You need to apply by 24 June 2018 to secure a place on one of the opportunities – please click here:  https://qmul.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/qmul-model-extra-application.  Support is available if you want advice or feedback on your application. To book an appointment to get your application checked, call 020 7882 8533 or visit the Careers & Enterprise Centre in the Queens’ Building, Room WG3.You’re invited to apply for up to three opportunities, but you will only be able to accept one place.

InQUBEate:

If you’ve ever had an idea for an entrepreneurial project that you’d like to try out, or would simply like to develop enterprise skills to enhance your CV, InQUBEate is for you.

This QMUL Model Extra opportunity will:

  • introduce you to tools, including the lean canvas model, that will give you a framework to develop and test an idea for a new product or service.
  • give you the opportunity to meet a business partner and/ or team.
  • give you the opportunity to solve problems in a team.
  • develop your professional networks by introducing you to a range of mentors from different industries.
  • develop your skills in applying and responding to criticism (from mentors and peers).
  • enable you to put all of the tools you learn (e.g. market research) into practice as you will research the development of a real business concept.
  • provide you with training and practice in pitching, to help you to develop your presentation skills.

Ariel Kamara, Kam Alive Chocolates

Ariel was a design and engineering student at QMUL when he first had the idea of setting up a raw chocolate business with his sister, Daniella. Kam Alive make nutritious chocolates that are free from refined sugars, gluten free, and vegan and paleo friendly.

After winning a £5000 Grow It award from qEnterprise and a place on InQUBEate, Ariel transformed his business from an occasional market stall to a business with three full time members of staff, e-commerce website, and over 15 different stockists across the UK.

Specialist advertising mentors on  InQUBEate helped him to  develop a marketing strategy and to source advertorials in Vogue and the Daily Mail.

Ariel now works on the business full time, and in 2017 beat 2000 entrants to the make the final 6 of the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Competition.

Leadership, Management and Professional Skills (LMaPS):

If you see yourself working in the public sector, or beginning your career as part of a large organisation, LMaPS could give you the start you’ll need. This QMUL Model Extra opportunity looks at you as the ‘Emerging Professional’.

It is intended to prepare you for Graduate Entry Schemes, where you will be expected to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, as part of a larger organisation.

You will examine the way in which your preferred work styles can impact on working relationships, performance and professional effectiveness.

You will be introduced to key principles of people, process and project management, to techniques for objective decision-making, and influencing others.  You will experience project working which will focus on applying your new learning, working within a small group to deliver project conclusions.

This is a brand new opportunity for QMUL students in 2018/19

QConsult:

Develop your professional skills, CV and networks by working on a real life business project. During QConsult you will work in a multi-disciplinary team of students on a mini consultancy project for a business or charity who act as your client.  All projects include elements of research, analysis and recommendation. After working on the project for 5 weeks, teams present their findings directly to the client in the form of a short report and presentation. You will receive pre-project training from Careers & Enterprise staff around consultancy, project management, professional and presentation skills. Teams also attend regular project coaching meetings with a QMUL supervisor and a post-project debrief where you will learn how to apply this experience to future applications and interviews. You will be paid London Living Wage (£10.20 per/hour) for the 20 hours of project work for your client.

QInsight: Civil Service Fast Stream

This is your opportunity to develop a deep insight into the Civil Service, its culture, career paths and its application and recruitment methods, with an over-arching goal of improving your success in graduate application processes, whatever the role and sector. You will attend information sessions, interactive workshops and mock assessments led by the Civil Service as well as visit their offices, where networking is facilitated. Students who complete QInsight will increase their knowledge of the Civil Service and experience of common graduate selection methods, professional networking and commercial awareness.

QTaster:

Experience the working environments and roles of different graduate employers. You will attend several sessions over the semester with a range of graduate employers that will include presentations by different speakers, tours of the facilities, interactive business case studies and facilitated networking sessions. The final session will cover how to apply your QTaster experiences and learning around commercial awareness, professional networking and career choice going forward.

InQUBEate

Your time commitment: you will be required to attend weekly two hour workshops, and are expected to spend another four hours a week on developing your business ideas, applying the skills you’ve learned that week in practice.
